Julia's Empanadas
About This Spot
Julia’s Empanadas is the kind of neighborhood spot where the warmth of a fresh-baked empanada is matched by the easy, welcoming rhythm of the place itself. Nestled on a lively stretch of 18th Street NW in Washington, DC, it invites both longtime locals and curious visitors to slow down for a moment and savor something genuinely comforting. The modest space hums with quiet anticipation as pastries fill the air with a subtle, doughy promise — an invitation to indulge in something made with care and history.
Inside, the pace feels unhurried yet purposeful, a small haven where staff members greet you like a neighbor stopping by with something special. There’s little fanfare here, just the steady hum of fresh empanadas being prepared and baked, the kind of authenticity you sense instantly. The atmosphere is intimate rather than bustling, making it effortless to imagine this spot as a go-to refuge whether you’re grabbing a quick bite or picking up a batch for a gathering.
The joy of Julia’s lies in those inviting, handheld parcels of culture and flavor. Each empanada carries a story, balancing savory notes and sweet surprises — from traditional fillings that evoke Cuban and Latin American roots to unexpected twists that keep the experience fresh. Whether you’re drawn to the comfort of a savory chicken salteña or tempted by the sweet allure of a guava peach empanada, the flavors unfold with thoughtful seasoning and a satisfying tenderness. There’s also a gentle nod to variety and inclusion, with options that feature hearty vegetables and unique blends that invite you to appreciate a broad palate without fuss.
Though seating is limited — this is as much a to-go treasure trove as it is a neighborhood gathering point — the true pleasure is in the moments shared over these baked delights. From quiet solo snacks after a busy day to lively group orders prepped with care, Julia’s Empanadas crafts experiences around simple food and genuine human connection. It’s a place where good food quietly anchors the day, where you hear the soft exchanges of recommendations and laughter alongside the crisp folding of dough.
Julia’s Empanadas doesn’t shout for attention, yet its steady presence on 18th Street resonates deeply with those who know it. For anyone wandering through the neighborhood, it’s the kind of stop that feels like a small, joyful discovery — a reminder that the best experiences often come in warm, understated packages.

Anna was the EXCELLENT lady behind the counter and the one who baked our 36 little cocktail party empanadas fresh for my pick up. I called her 2 days in advance so she could plan. They were absolutely beautiful (design and taste). You should all buy her 36 package (you can choose 3 different fillings of 12 each and we did). I will be coming back here. I hope they don't ever close down. The Dupont Circle location shut down because I think the building owner is renovating so they had to leave.

No trip to DC is complete without a stop at Julia's. After having dinner nearby my wife and I grabbed a stash for our hotel room. Perfect snack for any time of day. The salteńas is a beautiful mix of flavors. 10/10

Freshly baked, sumptuous empanadas. Absolutely delicious and worth a stop if you’re in the area. Limited seating but great as a snack on the go. I tried both the chorizo empanada and vegetable empanada and both were excellent. Good amount of filling and spot on seasoning. If you like and appreciate this review please give it a like or a thumbs up so that I know what content to include in future reviews.

This place is a classic!!! I've been coming here for a league night snack for 20 years! Still as popular and authentic as ever! They offer both savory and sweet empanadas that always hit the spot!

Tucked away in the heart of Adams Morgan, I stumbled upon Julia's Empanadas and was immediately drawn in by its cozy atmosphere. Faced with a wide variety of options, I asked for the most popular choice and was thrilled with the Chilean-Style Beef empanada. It was filled with a delicious mix of ground and chopped beef, raisins, hard-boiled egg, onion, and olive, with a perfectly spicy kick. The filling was absolutely delicious. I can't wait to go back and try more flavors!

Reliable food ready in seconds when you’re hangry. Today I had the chorizo with black beans and rice, along with the guava peach for dessert. Affordable. Filling. Fast. Tasty. When you’re sick of pizza by the slice, cross the street; get an empanada!
